Sep petcoke imports down by 10% YOY
US remains top supplier of petcoke to Turkey
Petcoke deliveries to Turkey totaled 322,558 mt in September, up 11.3% from August and 10% down year on year, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute published Nov. 4.
The month over month rise in imports was due to a rise in spot demand for petcoke from Turkish cement buyers, while decreased utilization of thermal coal was another factor behind the rise in petcoke volumes, according to market participants.
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed the weekly CIF Turkey 5.5% sulfur petcoke price at an average of $88.25/mt in September. The price was last assessed at $83/mt on Oct. 30, up $1.50/mt on the week.
In contrast, Platts assessed weekly CIF Med 6,000 kcal/kg NAR Russian origin thermal coal price at an average of $104.25/mt in September. The price was last assessed at $107/mt on Nov. 1.
Over the January-September period, petcoke imports totaled 3.1 MMt, an increase from 2.02 MMt in the same period of 2023, with significant increases across all supply origins.
The US remained the leading supplier of petcoke to Turkey in September, accounting for 75% of the total at 243,105 mt, up 28.2% month over month and 9.9% year over year.
After a substantial rise in petcoke imports from Venezuela in July, supplies from the country continued to fall significantly by 92% month over month to 3,000 mt in September and down 84% year over year.
Russia delivered 21,113 mt to Turkey in September, up 96% month over month and 92% year over year.
Meanwhile, Spain's supplies continued to rise and stood at 55,339 mt in September, up from 51,142 mt in August and down 49% compared to 2023.
